NVISION Officially Moves into Zhangjiang’s “Silicon Photonics Core Source”—the Shanghai Silicon Photonics Future Industry Cluster

Recently, NVISION, a global hard-technology company in optoelectronic integration, completed its relocation and moved into the Silicon Photonics Core Source—the Shanghai Silicon Photonics Future Industry Cluster—at the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Innovation and Expo Park in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area. Its Shanghai Global Research and Operations Center is now open. The move-in ceremony received strong support from the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, the Pudong New Area Government, and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech (Zhangjiang Haoxin). Guests from government authorities, industrial investors, and the trade press witnessed this new milestone in NVISION’s development.

Remarks by Dr. Nie Hui

Yu Jinxu, silicon photonics program manager at the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, attended the ceremony and offered his congratulations on NVISION’s arrival at the Silicon Photonics Core Source. He said that silicon photonics is a core technology for AI computing infrastructure. The Commission, together with Pudong New Area, is building the Silicon Photonics Core Source cluster to create a complete innovation ecosystem spanning proof of concept, pilot-scale R&D, and industrial deployment. He welcomed hard-technology companies such as NVISION, which command core silicon-photonics technologies, to take root in Zhangjiang and to draw on the cluster’s high-quality incubators, shared service platforms, and upstream and downstream industry resources to accelerate technology iteration and product deployment, supporting Shanghai in establishing itself as a center of silicon photonics innovation.

NVISION ribbon-cutting ceremony

Directors of NVISION then joined the ribbon cutting, marking the formal start of operations at the company’s Shanghai Global Research and Operations Center. After the ceremony, officials, shareholders, and members of the media moved to the new showroom, where Dr. Nie Hui, founder and chief executive of NVISION, briefed the guests on the company’s technology roadmap and latest product progress.

About NVISION

NVISION is a global hard-technology company in optoelectronic integration for next-generation AI computing centers. Its mission is to open a next stage of Moore’s law through the convergence of photonics and electronics. The company focuses on silicon photonics and high-speed optoelectronic interconnects for AI data centers. Building on core technologies in silicon photonics, advanced packaging, and heterogeneous integration of photonics and electronics, it provides silicon photonic chips, end-to-end optical engines for near-packaged optics (NPO) and co-packaged optics (CPO), and a full stack of light sources and optical engines for next-generation optical input/output (OIO) based on wavelength-division-multiplexed microring modulation. NVISION is closely involved in drafting China Mobile’s DORA open standard for reconfigurable optical interconnects, and has completed a full product portfolio along the path “NPO as the transition, CPO as the mainstream, and OIO as the end state.”

The company runs a three-site R&D system: Shanghai for research and operations, Xi’an for research, and Suzhou for research and industrialization. As of September 2026, the team numbers nearly 40. Core members come from Intel and from leading lidar and AI technology companies. The R&D team draws on graduates of Tsinghua University, Nanjing University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and the University of Science and Technology of China, and has hands-on capability across the full chain from chip design, process integration, and assembly, test, and verification through high-volume delivery. The company has raised several hundred million yuan and continues to invest in silicon photonics and in the R&D and engineering deployment of heterogeneously integrated optoelectronics based on advanced packaging.

Its in-house integrated silicon photonic chips have reached interim results. Programs for NPO and CPO optical engines are advancing on schedule, with samples expected in the first quarter of 2027. The company has also completed early research on microring modulators and on multiwavelength laser arrays for next-generation OIO light sources. It aims to address the industry constraints of insufficient bandwidth, high power consumption, and low integration in AI clusters of 10,000 GPUs, and to deliver a domestically developed, full-stack solution for high-speed optical interconnects to AI supercomputing centers, cloud providers, computing hubs, equipment vendors, and research institutes.

Moving into the Silicon Photonics Core Source: Aligning Research and Industry to Build the Ecosystem

The Silicon Photonics Core Source, Shanghai’s cluster for the future silicon photonics industry, is China’s first future-industry cluster devoted to silicon photonics. It is coordinated by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, supported by the Pudong New Area Government, and operated by Zhangjiang Hi-Tech (Zhangjiang Haoxin). It brings together silicon photonic chip companies, research platforms, and industrial capital, and provides a public test platform for optoelectronic chips, shared cleanrooms, and a silicon photonics proof-of-concept platform. The design is that “the floor above or below is the upstream or downstream partner,” lowering the cost of R&D verification and moving technology from the laboratory into products.

NVISION chose the cluster in order to embed itself in Zhangjiang’s silicon photonics innovation ecosystem. The cluster’s public technology platforms and dense network of industry partners will support joint development, tape-out, and test verification of the company’s photonic integrated circuits and of its NPO, CPO, and OIO optical engines. At the same time, NVISION will apply its experience in heterogeneous optoelectronic integration, three-dimensional advanced packaging, and the building of a domestic supply chain, and will work with upstream and downstream companies and research institutions in the park to strengthen Shanghai’s capacity in silicon photonics.

Dr. Nie Hui, founder of NVISION, said: “As demand for AI computing surges, conventional electrical interconnects have become a bottleneck for computing clusters. Convergence of photonics and electronics is the necessary path if optoelectronic devices are to keep advancing with Moore’s law. Moving into the Silicon Photonics Core Source is a new starting point for NVISION. Based in Zhangjiang, we will use the cluster’s industry, talent, and platform resources, continue to work on the core technologies of high-speed silicon photonic interconnects, and accelerate engineering and domestic production, contributing to China’s industry for high-speed optical interconnects in AI computing.”

Looking ahead, NVISION will use its Shanghai global research and operations center as the hub, link its research bases in Xi’an and Suzhou, continue to increase R&D investment, and attract more engineers in photonics and chips. It will steadily carry silicon photonic chips, NPO and CPO optical engines, and OIO technologies through development and into deployment, with the aim of scaled delivery of domestically developed high-speed optoelectronic interconnect products.
